Nissan Frontier PRO-4X Off-Road Package Upgrade
Nissan gave the Frontier a light refresh for 2025 that includes a host of new in-cabin comfort and convenience features. It also adds a hefty maximum towing capacity and more power for the 310-horsepower PRO-4X off-road package.
The crew cab version is powered by a potent 3.8-liter V6 with an electronic locking rear differential and four-wheel drive for driving off pavement. It also has Bilstein shocks for handling and ride quality that is above average for a midsize pickup.
Features
With the PRO-4X package, the Nissan Frontier Pro4X takes this capable truck to the next level. This off-road upgrade adds the right blend of engineering, style, and grit to make this pickup trail-ready straight off the showroom floor. It also helps you stay safe while traveling off-road with features like blind spot warning, rear parking sensors, and high-beam assist.
On the outside, a special paint color (Afterburn Orange) and body-colored bumpers, mirrors and door handles highlight the PRO-4X's rugged aesthetic. Its unique exterior treatments include aluminum skid plates that help protect the oil pan, fuel tank and transfer case. A body-colored front tow hook and special badges and decals complete the look.
Inside, a six-way power driver's seat and 60/40-split fold-down rear bench seat provide seating for up to five people. The crew cab offers 100.1 cubic feet of passenger volume. For the tech-savvy, a standard 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Drivers can also use a built-in subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless charging.
Performance
Nissan has made significant improvements to the Frontier over the past couple of years, boosting both power and fuel efficiency. Unlike some of its rivals that lean heavily on touch-based controls, the Pro-4X sticks with knobs and physical buttons. Its standard stop-start feature is a little rough, however, so be ready to hit the engine start button several times on every trip.
The Frontier is a solid handler on the trails, thanks to its thick sway bars and sturdy suspension system. It also tracks well on the freeway, without much side-to-side wander or ping-ponging between lane markers. Its hydraulic steering can be a bit heavy, though, and some drivers find it hard to get comfortable. The truck also lacks the rearview camera that you’ll find on most competitors.
Safety
Nissan's Frontier has a variety of advanced driver-assistance features that help you stay safe both on and off the road. They include back-up camera, front collision mitigation system, intelligent emergency braking, lane departure warning and more.
These systems work together to make driving a bit easier, especially in tight parking lots or on busy highways. Blind spot warning alerts you when another vehicle sneaks into your blind spot and lane departure warning gives a vibration or visual indicator if you start to drift out of your lane. Intelligent cruise control allows you to set a pre-set distance from the vehicle in front of you and accelerates, decelerates and brakes to maintain that buffer.
Listening to customer feedback, Nissan made multiple functional revisions to the Frontier this year. They include a standard tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a four-way power passenger seat on SV and higher trim levels and two-way power lumbar adjustments for the driver's seat on SL models. The Intelligent Around View Monitor also got an upgrade to allow you to see a wider area of the ground when operating in off-road mode.
